Cardiff City 2 Liverpool 2 AET, 2-3 on penalties League Cup Final, Wembley

Nine days on from the League Cup final at Wembley, and my voice has just recovered from all the singing and shouting. My disappointed heart is also on the mend, and the pride of our brilliant performance in the League Cup final is starting to outweigh the heartache.

After two successive defeats it was great to get back on track with the 3-1 win against Peterborough midweek, but is there enough steam left  to keep up the challenge for promotion in the remaining 15 Championship matches?

Cardiff City 2 Ipswich Town 2
Peterborough United 4 Cardiff City 3

On Saturday Michael Chopra – not surprisingly – made a goal scoring return to Cardiff with his new team Ipswich, and we were lucky to get a draw thanks to a dubious penalty decision after having fallen behind 1-2 in the second half. Two seasons ago we surrendered a 4-0 half time lead to let Peterborough back into the game and score four goals in the second half to make it 4-4. On Tuesday we twice had the lead at London Road, and went 3-2 up with just eleven minutes remaining, but we still couldn’t hang on to it. Devastating.

Fulham’s Norwegian Bjørn Helge Riise, who spent time on loan at Sheffield United towards the end of last season, is back in the Championship having been loaned by Erik Huseklepp’s club Portsmouth. With Cardiff’s already thin squad hit by further injuries in Sunday’s battle against Leicester, Malky Mackay and his recruitment department have been busy trying to bring someone in before tomorrow’s match against Southampton, but with no luck. City have missed out on six loan targets according to Mackay.

Cardiff City 0 Leicester City 0

First of all, it was a great pleasure to be able to watch a Cardiff match live on TV for the first time since the league opener against West Ham. It was not so great to witness one Cardiff player after the other become injured and weaken our effort against big spending Leicester City’s star-studded team, forcing Malky Mackay to change both tactics and personnel early on.

Cardiff City 2 Leicester City 2 a.e.t., 7-6 on penalties, League Cup

It’s good to be through to the fourth round of the League Cup, although Burnley at home wasn’t exactly a dream draw. Like in the two first round of the League Cup, extra time were needed for us when Leicester City came to the Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday, and like in the second leg of the Play Off semi final versus Leicester in 2010 Cardiff won on penalties – even without Yann Kermorgant among the Leicester penalty takers!

While Norway slowly recover from last Friday’s shocking atrocities where at least 76 people were killed, Cardiff City continue the preparations for the upcoming season. Most notably three more players have come in since my last post, Sloavakian U21 international Filip Kiss on a season long loan, Scotish international and prolific goalscorer Kenny Miller and last but not least the talented Frenchman Rudy Gestede, bringing the total number of newcomers this summer to nine. That’s one more than big spending and ambitious Leicester City, who, at least in the eyes of many bookmakers, are emerging as one of the favourites for promotion.
