Birmingham City 1 Cardiff City 1

As other results in the Championship keep going in our favour and after the solid performance and decent point away at Birmingham, our hopes of a top six finish are revitalized. Here in Norway the new season got underway on Sunday, and a couple of Championship rejects made the headlines.

Portsmouth’s captain Liam Lawrence, who made his Cardiff debut against Brighton two days ago, abandoned the sinking Portsmouth ship to join us on loan last week, and the experienced midfielder seems a good acquisition. Norwegian Erik Huseklepp has also left Portsmouth to join our promotion rivals Birmingham, and a few other Norwegian have been on the move lately too.

Cardiff City 3 Portsmouth 2

Norwegian international Erik Huseklepp played for 88 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, but the former Brann player had left the field when Craig Conway made it 3-2 in the 92nd minute and dramatically secured the win for the Bluebirds.

Wales 4 Norway 1, Cardiff City Stadium

From a Norwegian point of view the defeat against Wales last Saturday at the
Cardiff City Stadium was a huge dissapointment and the 1-4 scoreline was embarrassing. For Wales it was a brilliant match and a great result that gives
continued optimism ahead of the World Cup qulaifiers. As a Cardiff City
supporter, I must admit I wasn’t that saddened by the outcome.

When Norway play at the Cardiff City Stadium (CCS) later today, the number of Norwegians having played at the Cardiff City Stadium will nearly quadruple. The match will be a special one for John Arne Riise, who will make his 100th appearance for Norway, and Riise will be up against his golf club attacker from 2007, Craig Bellamy. (more…)

Cardiff City 2 Crystal Palace 0
SK Brann 1 Aalesunds FK 2, Norwegian Cup Final

Norwegian Jonathan Parr was an unused sub for Crystal Palace in our excellent win over the Eagles on Saturday. On Sunday Parr went to Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo for the Norwegian cup final, and although he of course didn’t play there either, he at least left the ground happy and with a cup winners medal, as his former club Aalesunds FK, for whom he played in a few cup rounds before his transfer to Palace, beat my Norwegian favourites, SK Brann, 2-1.

Fulham’s Norwegian Bjørn Helge Riise, who spent time on loan at Sheffield United towards the end of last season, is back in the Championship having been loaned by Erik Huseklepp’s club Portsmouth. With Cardiff’s already thin squad hit by further injuries in Sunday’s battle against Leicester, Malky Mackay and his recruitment department have been busy trying to bring someone in before tomorrow’s match against Southampton, but with no luck. City have missed out on six loan targets according to Mackay.

Cardiff have an impressive number of players on international duty at the moment. Wales finally won with Darcy Blake at center back, Aron Gunnarsson was out injured for Iceland versus Norway, but Kenny Miller was in great form for Scotland. On Sunday I watched with great interest Sky Sports’ “Goals on Sunday” as Dave Jones was one of the guests. It was good to see Jones again for the first time since he left Cardiff, and I felt his appearance on the show became like a public closure for his relationship with Cardiff.

Portsmouth 1 Cardiff City 1

Flashback: Saturday the 16th of April 2011. Outside the Cardiff City Stadium. The Portsmouth players arrive for an away match against promotion chasing Cardiff. The first players who come out of the coach are greeted by Bluebirds supporters wanting their autographs. Then Nwankwo Kanu appears. Instant booing and bantering erupts! The reason was of course that Kanu was the player to win the 2008 F.A. Cup final at Wembley for Portsmouth against Cardiff when he scored the only goal of the match. On Saturday Kanu netted against us again, but this time it only ment securing a draw for Pompey. Luckily Portsmouth’s Norwegian newcomer Erik Huseklepp did not have a good home debut, and Cardiff could head home to South Wales with a point.

Erik Huseklepp  has become the latest Norwegian in the Championship signing for today’s Cardiff opponents Portsmouth, and it’ll be interesting to see if he succeeds. The Norwegians turning out in the Championship last season all failed to make an impact.
